Many visitors arrive in Switzerland during a hot summer heatwave. It is easy to forget that the top of Mount Titlis is a high alpine glacier. If you arrive in shorts and sandals, you will freeze. Here is exactly what you need to wear to stay comfortable and safe at the summit.

Do you need winter clothes for Titlis in the summer?

Yes, you absolutely need winter clothing during the summer months.

The mountain station sits at 3,020 meters (9,908 feet) above sea level. At this altitude, temperatures remain at or below freezing 365 days a year. Wind chill makes it feel colder, especially on the 100-meter Cliff Walk.

What jackets and layers should I pack?

Bring a thick winter jacket, thermal layers, and a warm hat.

Start with thermal base layers or a warm sweater. Add a windproof winter jacket on top. You will also want gloves and a winter hat. Dressing in layers lets you adjust as you move between the summit and lower stations.

Can I wear sneakers to Mount Titlis?

You need sturdy, closed-toe walking shoes with good grip.

You will walk on ice and glacier snow at the summit. Standard city sneakers get wet and cold very quickly. Waterproof boots with a solid tread are highly recommended. You need good grip for the slippery ice floor inside the 5,000-year-old Glacier Cave.

Why is sun protection mandatory?

The glacier snow reflects intense UV rays directly into your face.

High altitude sun exposure is very strong. You must wear sunglasses with high UV protection to prevent snow blindness. Apply high-SPF sunscreen and SPF lip balm before you leave the cable car. Sunburns happen fast at 3,000 meters.

Is it warmer at the Trübsee middle station?

Yes, Trübsee sits at 1,800 meters and is significantly warmer than the summit.

If you plan to spend time hiking around the alpine lake, you might not need your heavy winter coat here. This is why layering is useful. You can easily remove your outer jacket while enjoying family activities at this lower elevation.

How should I carry my gear from Zurich or Lucerne?

Wear your heavy coat or bring a small backpack for your day trip.

You do not want to hold your coat on the 43-minute train ride from Lucerne to Engelberg. A comfortable backpack is the best way to carry your winter layers and water bottle. If you book a guided coach tour, you can often leave extra items on the bus.
